Time Management Strategies for the SAT Reading & Writing Section

📖 Understanding the Test Structure

The Reading & Writing section consists of:
📌 Two 32-minute modules (total of 64 minutes)
📌 27 questions per module (total of 54 questions)
📌 Just over 1 minute per question

🔹 Adaptive Testing: Your performance on the first module determines the difficulty of your second module. You cannot move to the next module early on test day, so use your time wisely.

✅ 1. Save Time on Easier Questions

Some questions require more reading than others. Answer the quick and easy ones faster to save time for difficult ones.

✅ 2. Make Predictions Before Looking at Answer Choices

Before reading the answer choices, try to predict the answer based on the question.
🎯 This prevents overanalyzing choices and wasting time.

✅ 3. Use Process of Elimination

If you can’t predict the answer, eliminate wrong choices one by one.
🔹 If you can’t eliminate three, take your best guess and move on!

✅ 4. Trust Your Instincts—Don’t Second-Guess Yourself!

If a question seems “too easy,” don’t overthink it.
✔️ Your first instinct is usually correct—especially if you’ve been practicing.

✅ 5. Mark Questions for Review

If you're stuck on a question, mark it for review and move forward.
🔹 At the end of the module, revisit flagged questions before time runs out.

✅ 6. Always Select an Answer—Never Leave Questions Blank!

There’s no penalty for wrong answers, so always take a guess.
📌 Tip: Choose an answer first, even if you plan to review it later.

✅ 7. Use the Remaining Time to Review Answers

After completing the module, go back to check flagged questions and verify answers.
💡 For reading questions, make sure there’s evidence in the passage for your choice.

Practice tests allow you to skip ahead to the second module—but don’t do it!
