AP PRE-CALCULUS

The perfect bridge to calculus and beyond.
AP Precalculus empowers students to explore advanced functions and real-world applications—building essential skills for college math, science, and STEM-focused careers.

What Is AP Precalculus?

AP Precalculus is a dynamic, college-level math course that equips students with the tools to model and analyse real-world phenomena using a wide variety of functions. Designed to build a strong foundation for future college math and science courses—including calculus—it emphasises conceptual understanding, mathematical fluency, and problem-solving in real-world contexts.

This course is equivalent to a first-semester college precalculus course and explores a diverse range of function types and their behaviour through multiple representations: graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Function Families: Polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, parametric, polar, and vector-valued

  • Function Analysis: Domain, range, extrema, asymptotes, transformations, inverses, and compositions

  • Modelling & Covariation: Interpreting and constructing models using real-world data

  • Symbolic Fluency: Algebraic manipulation, solving equations/inequalities, and matrix operations

  • Technology Integration: Using graphing calculators and digital tools for analysis, modelling, and visualisation

Students learn to interpret dynamic changes, model real scenarios, and analyse mathematical patterns across various disciplines.

Who Should Take AP Precalculus?

AP Precalculus is ideal for students who:

✔️ Are preparing for college calculus or advanced STEM courses
✔️ Want to strengthen their foundation in algebra, trigonometry, and mathematical modeling
✔️ Plan careers in mathematics, engineering, physics, biology, health science, business, or data science
✔️ Are looking for a challenging, application-driven capstone math experience in high school

Prerequisites

To be successful in AP Precalculus, students should have:

  • Completed Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2

  • Proficiency in:

    • Linear, quadratic, exponential functions

    • Right triangle trigonometry

    • Solving systems of equations

    • Polynomial manipulation and factoring

    • Using piecewise and complex functions

    • Working with radicals and exponents

    • Communicating across multiple function representations

No formal prerequisite is required beyond this math background.

Technology Requirements

Technology enhances learning but does not replace algebraic skill. Students will:

🔹 Use graphing calculators for modelling, graphing, solving, and analysing functions
🔹 Perform regression and matrix operations
🔹 Learn to switch between manual problem-solving and technology-based exploration

Note: The AP exam includes both calculator and non-calculator sections.
